Ghostbusters (2016): The ConnoReview

This could have been a whole lot worse.

Over 25 years after the release of the original Ghostbusters comes this surprisingly faithful and thrilling reboot of the Ghostbusters series. Though naysayers will throw my review away just like they seem to have done with the film itself, I'm here to tell you that new Ghostbusters isn't as good as old Ghostbusters, but it's still pretty good.
Kristen Wiig stars as paranormal researcher turned nuclear physicist Erin Gilbert, a closet lover of ghosts and spooky scary stuff. She jumps right back into business with her former research partner Abby Yates (Melissa McCarthy) when they stumble upon an actually haunted mansion and begin gaining notoriety. Alongside them are scatterbrained electrical engineer and technician Jillian Holtzman (Kate McKinnon) and Patty Tolan (Leslie Jones), a subway worker and longtime New Yorker. This new bunch isn't quite as instantly lovable as Bill Murray's Venkman and Harold Ramis' Egon, but they're interesting enough and play well off of each other. Also joining them is Chris Hemsworth, who steals the show as receptionist Kevin (a certain scene involving a cat had me in tears from laughter).
Cinematography and editing were top-notch, the ghosts weren't too scary (this is a Ghostbusters film after all) but Mr. Stay-Puft and Slimer looked marvelous in their new CGI glory.
What surprised me about this film was despite all of the newness of it all and the new all-female cast, it still felt distinctly Ghostbusters. None of the characters were carbon copies of the originals, which is probably for the best given that we live in a very different time than when the original films released. At the end of the day, it left me feeling good about the future of the Ghostbusters franchise. If you want some quality entertainment, go see this new Ghostbusters film. It's rather good.
